The Natural Resource Associate Director position will oversee the Natural Resources Group throughout our multiple offices. The successful candidate will have specific experience defining, developing and implementing a strategic plan to grow and retain a highly effective and engaged Natural Resources team, focused on generating new opportunities for Natural Resources work with a diverse group of clients, consistently delivering high quality technical solutions to our clients; proven experience leading and managing a team of technical specialists, including day to day oversight, mentoring and follow-up to meet expectations for report quality, project schedule and submittal of administrative requirements such as timesheets, expense reports, invoicing, etc.; a proven track record of developing and/or implementing natural resource management plans; experience in the application of proven methodologies to promote, protect and/or preserve biological resources; and relevant certifications, registrations, licenses and permits for their area(s) of specialty. Duties and Responsibilities
- Establish and grow market presence throughout the State of California through marketing and business development, including the development of high quality biological resource-related proposals, Statements of Qualifications and general marketing materials
- Develop existing and new clients in collaboration with other leaders
- Hire, mentor, grow, and manage a diverse technical staff of environmental and natural resource professionals
- Lead staff and sub consultants in the successful execution of projects, including meeting scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards
- Coordinate and contribute to the development and execution of our company’s strategic growth plan with office managers and practice leaders
- Prepare and manage financial budgets for the group and allocate resources accordingly
- Serve as a technical expert to mentor and train project managers and technical staff
- Conduct technical studies and define compliance approaches toward acquisition of approvals, permits, and clearances pursuant to federal, state, and local laws and regulations
- Lead and coordinate technical work in natural resources
- Write and produce reports or documents, review the work of others
- Develop resource management recommendations, assess project effects on resources, address, complex resource problems and issues that require advanced technical or regulatory knowledge
- Collaborate with an integrated team with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders
- Engage in a reasonable amount of travel, typically in-state
- Strong relationships with private, public sector clients and regulatory agencies
- Must have the desire to grow a practice serving government and private clients
- Must be able to develop environmental/technical reports and report templates, manage subconsultants, manage natural resource and planning staff, develop technical and cost proposals, develop/deliver presentations to clients, and perform business development
- Must be able to write strategically and present ideas in a well-thought out and comprehensive manner
- Extensive knowledge of natural resources and associated regulatory requirements, especially for federal agencies with primary oversight
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to effectively develop and implement a team leadership and development strategy to retain a highly effective and motivated team
- Ability to translate between science, planning, engineering, and policy
- Working knowledge of CEQA, NEPA, NHPA, ESA, CESA, CWA, and other state and federal environmental regulations
- Ability to plan, scope, and implement natural resources studies with limited input
- Demonstrable experience in business development is critical.
Education and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in Natural/Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Policy, or related discipline is required
- Master’s degree, Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), or related certifications are a plus
- 10+ years of experience in the Environmental or Biological Resources field(s)
- Significant experience working with governmental agencies to successfully manage and execute projects
- Knowledge of general principles and application of natural resource management methodologies
- GIS methods and use of GPS systems
- Proven record of growing highly motivated and effective teams to consistently deliver results that exceed client expectations
- Proven record of developing sustainable action plans regarding the protection of natural resource sites
Work is performed within a general office environment approximately 75% of the time.
Field work will be required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in varying conditions: heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, but may also be asked to operate field work equipment including but not limited to GPS, Trimble, binoculars, as well as safety equipment including hard hats, vests, measuring wheel, etc.

Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms and hand/finger dexterity. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may spend extended periods of time sitting in front of the computer. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Physical requirements include visiting sites which may require walking over a variety of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions while caring equipment and/or a pack. Additional physical requirements for the position include the ability to bend and kneel for extended periods of time, lift at least 15 lbs. and walk/hike sometimes multiple miles per day.
