Principal Site Reliability Engineer, F9

About F9
F9 is a mission-oriented team of Principal Software Engineers that have come together to deliver modern software engineering capabilities to the United States Defense Industry. Our customers include the United States Air Force, Aerospace, Raytheon, and Harris.

F9’s CEO, Eric Schoonover, started his career as a software engineer at Microsoft and Netflix where he progressed from a risky hire with no experience and no education to a principal level software engineer. He co-founded a YCombinator-funded startup after leaving Netflix and eventually landed at Time Inc as Vice President of Engineering. Prior to founding F9, he was Director of Engineering for the United States Digital Service in the Executive Office of the President, and Director of Engineering at the Defense Digital Service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

All F9 principals have extensive private sector experience and deeply value a culture of effective software engineering, freedom, and responsibility.

 Responsibilities

"Hope is not a strategy", Google SRE Handbook.

At F9 Principal Site Reliability Engineers define true operational strategies for our customers that ensure the efficient and reliable operation of large scale distributed software systems.

Principal Site Reliability Engineers combine software and systems engineering to build and operate distributed fault-tolerant software systems. Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) focus on operational problems ensuring that our customers systems—both internally critical and externally-visible systems—have demonstrate reliability and uptime appropriate to users' needs.

Site Reliability Engineers keep a watchful eye on capacity and performance and rapidly contribute improvements to all of our software systems. SREs focus on engineering work that reduces time spent on operational work, performing blameless postmortems, and proactively identify and fix potential future outages through iterative improvement that improves overall product quality. SREs have some of the most interesting and dynamic day-to-day software engineering workloads.

Required Capabilities
As a Principal Site Reliability Engineer at F9 the expectation is that you are both a highly effective software engineer and a deeply competent systems engineer capable of doing things at a Linux CLI that most competent software engineers do not believe is possible. You engage in and improve the implementation of software services through their entire lifecylce, from inception to operations. You participate in software design consulting, the development of common frameworks, capacity planning, launch reviews, and outage post-mortems. You maintain and evolve software services once they are operational monitoring their health and improving their scale by contributing changes that improve reliability. You are a leader, you work well with less experienced SREs, holding them to high standards of performance and mentoring them towards valuable contribution. You have demonstrated hands-on experience operating large-scale software systems used by thousands to millions of users.

This position requires a SECRET level or TOP SECRET level or TS/SCI level security clearance.

Requirements
  • Expertise in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.
  • At least 8 years experience working as a senior or principal level individual contributor on a software engineering team
  • Experience in one or more of the following: C, C++, Java, Python, Go, Perl, Ruby or shell scripting.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration (e.g., filesystems, inodes, system calls, etc) or networking (e.g., TCP/IP, routing, network topologies and hardware, SDN, etc.)
  • Ability to debug and optimize code and to automate routine tasks.
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with effective communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field involving systems engineering (e.g., Physics or Mathematics) or equivalent practical experience
