We’re Eargo and we’re on a mission to disrupt and transform the hearing health industry. We’re looking for those passionate individuals who jump out of bed in the morning dreaming of new ways to improve the lives of our customers. We’re tech geeks and dreamers. We believe
that every voice is unique and every idea is worth talking about. Moreover, we believe in passion and having fun. Because it takes passion to change the world and if you have passion in what you’re doing, you naturally have fun doing it.
Over 48 million Americans currently experience hearing loss and 80% of them do nothing about it. Their denial has many different shades, but more often than not it’s related to social stigma.
We at Eargo exist to give people their hearing without the social stigma so that they can go on being the cool person they are. That’s why we get out of bed in the morning and we take that seriously. And we’re looking for some great minds to join us on our journey.
Summary
As the Manager of Electrical Engineering at Eargo, you will be encouraged to push the limits of hearing aid technology to create delightful experiences for our customers – you will define the future of hearing health. The Manager of Electrical Engineering is responsible for ensuring the Electrical Engineering Team, meets or exceeds its design requirements and schedule deliverables, and includes all technical activities related to electrical development from conception to production. This is a high impact role requires deep experience in leading and managing an experienced electrical design team, working cross-functionally across the company to take a product from feasibility to production on budget and on schedule. He/she must be a hands-on contributor with the ability to deliver business results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Collaboration with Product Design, Clinical, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance will be essential to meet ambitious schedules and product requirements.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Define and drive the electrical team to ensure products meet or extend the customer and key stakeholder expectations.
- Develop research investigations that map business needs to technology solutions, and translate these research investigations into active product development
- Development of concepts to satisfy marketing, safety, quality, capacity, and cost requirements
- Feature design and testing to meet program objectives
- Detailed electrical design and product documentation, including directing detailed design from internal and joint development partner engineers
- Design of electrical architectures and processes to appropriately mitigate manufacturing risks, by involving the entire production supply chain in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews in all stages of the development process, in order to successfully complete prototype scale manufacturing lines for initial low-volume builds and testing, eventually scaling to high-volume production verification and validation builds
- Create, update, and maintain design documentation, including but not limited to schematics, layout files, CAD drawings, bill of materials, travelers/routers, work instructions, test methods, protocols, and reports while complying to Eargo design process procedures and quality controls
- Collaborate and communicate with cross-functional team, vendors, and subcontractors to convey design initiatives and resolve design issues.
- Primary communication of electrical design concepts to key stakeholders (Members of the Board, Chief Executives, Advisors etc.) including sketches, schematics, layouts, prototypes and other
- Work with QA and Reliability teams on failure analysis and solution validation to complete successful product development. This will include development, implementation, monitoring, and improving design processes using best practice tools such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), Verification and Validation (V&V)
- Field failure analysis and solution evaluation for production product issues
- Support positive team interactions to accomplish program objectives
- Provide cross-functional program integration support to insure team success
- Leading project teams to timely delivery of products
- Schedule and milestone management (with the Engineering Program Management team)
- Managing electrical team interaction with overseas resources including contractor manufacturers
- Assist production transfer activities to manufacturing, including approximately 15% travel to manufacturing sites
- Applying technical expertise to problem solving throughout product lifecycle
- Mentoring Electrical Engineering team and Technicians in good product design practice
- Recruiting and developing Electrical Engineering Team who will continually raise the performance bar
- Engaging with new vendors on new product development/technology roadmaps
- Other tasks, as directed by the VP of Hardware Engineering
Requirements
- B.S. Electrical Engineering or related industry experience
- 10+ years of work experience (5+ years with MS or Ph.D)
- Demonstrated success in electronic designs that achieved intended objectives
- Demonstrated skills in team leadership, team management, project management and vendor management
- Must be a hands-on manager, able to bring electrical designs from concept, to schematic, to layout and to working prototypes debugged on the bench
- Hold weekly face to face meetings with all direct reports in Electrical Engineering team, defining tasks, schedule and accountability
- Miniature assembly with flex circuit experience is highly desired
- Acoustics or hearing instrument experience is highly desired
- Hearing instrument DSP experience is highly desirable, particularly On-Semi Ezairo DSP
- Knowledge in schematic design, simulation and layout
- Able to quickly develop schematics and simulations in CAD, prove out designs using complex system analog behavioral description languages, AHDL.
- Experience with RF systems including RF module selection including link budget generation, environmental analysis of blockers and interferes, noise mitigation (NFMI, BLE, Bluetooth Classic, Cellular, IoT,) antenna designs, matching circuits, use of RF test equipment, emissions testing both intentional and unintentional, and RF compliance testing
- Experience with wireless charging technologies and actual implementations in physically small products, such as wearables. Should understand coil design, optimizing coil-to-coil efficiencies, implications of TX driver design and RX battery management
- Demonstrated design creativity – able to find innovative, hidden solutions to complex problems
- Able to quickly communicate/test abstract ideas with prototypes, bread-boarding etc.
