Head of Intellectual Property

At Dyno, we are reshaping the gene therapy landscape. Our groundbreaking AAV capsid engineering platform harnesses advances in DNA library synthesis, high-throughput sequencing, and machine learning to generate transformative gene therapy vectors. We target the major barriers that separate AAV gene therapy research from real-world therapies, including delivery efficiency, tissue and cell-type specificity, immune evasion, packaging size and manufacturing. Our vectors will accelerate the transition of gene therapies from the lab to the clinic for the benefit of patients worldwide.

The Role

We are looking for a dynamic, collaborative and creative Head of Intellectual Property to join our team.  At Dyno you will solve intellectual problems and identify strategic and creative opportunities for our long-term IP portfolio, made possible by our massive experimental datasets and insights drawn from machine learning. You will play a lead role establishing the company’s foundational IP strategy. 
How You Will Contribute:
  • Partner with the R&D organization, the leadership team, and outside counsel to identify, develop and execute strategies that maximize the value of the company's intellectual property worldwide
  • Anticipate legal and intellectual property-related issues and formulate and execute a course of action to address identified issues
  • Provide patentability, freedom-to-operate and other legal opinions and risk assessments
  • Monitor competitive intellectual property, conduct prior art searches and respond to administrative challenges by third parties
  • Conduct due diligence on strategic opportunities and provide tactical transactional support to business development and the leadership team, including negotiating, drafting, and interpreting strategic collaborations, licensing agreements and contracts
  • Review publications, presentations, press releases and other materials for clearance
  • Coordinate with Dyno internal and external collaborators on intellectual property matters
  • Manage the company’s trademark portfolio
  • Develop and implement invention disclosure process to strategically enhance our patent portfolio
  • Advise senior leadership on key IP issues

Basic Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience acting as patent counsel focusing on biologics, either at a biotech or pharma company or representing these companies as IP counsel at a law firm
  • Advanced degree in the biological sciences or biomedical engineering
  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Significant experience drafting and negotiating agreements and contracts
  • Demonstrate confidence in making difficult decisions independently 
  • Display an ability to manage and prioritize multiple work streams simultaneously
  • Work with a strong attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and prioritize 
  • Work efficiently in fast-paced, changing environments and respond effectively in challenging and ambiguous situations
  • Ability to think critically, communicate effectively across broad spectrum of audience both internal and external and express excellent written skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Have significant experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams spanning research, development, CMC, and regulatory
  • JD and admission in good standing to a state bar
