English Language Assessment Expert, PhD

Duolingo is looking for a world-class expert in language testing, with the desire and ability to support qualitative test and content development, as well as quantitative psychometric and operational research. You will join Duolingo’s growing research team and contribute to agile, ongoing development of the Duolingo English Test (DET), supporting our efforts to advance Duolingo’s mission through science.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with talented researchers, engineers, and designers to bring cutting-edge, research-driven assessment instruments to life
  • Collaborate in the development and auditing of English assessment content (including qualitative and quantitative studies of new, interactive item formats)
  • Recruit and train ESL/ELL experts who help create content for the DET
  • Help develop quality control processes to monitor test item and score integrity
  • Conduct studies related to the validity, reliability, and fairness of test scores
  • Share DET research findings with a variety of stakeholders: through blogs, technical reports, conference presentations (LTRC, AAAL, IACAT, etc.), and peer-reviewed journals (Language Testing, Applied Linguistics, Psychometrika, etc.)

REQUIREMENTS:
  • PhD in language testing, psychometrics, applied linguistics, educational psychology, or a related field
  • 2+ years of work experience in an education-related field (academia or industry)
  • Research expertise and publication record in the field of language assessment
  • Experience teaching English as a second language, developing operational English language assessments, or other relevant professional experience
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with standard language proficiency frameworks (CEFR preferred)
  • A desire to make the world a better place through technology
  • Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA

EXCEPTIONAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:
  • 5+ years of post-PhD experience working in an education-related field
  • Excellent skills in data science tools, such as R and Python
  • Experience with the design and development of computer-adaptive tests
  • Awareness of machine learning and natural language processing technologies, and an open mind as to how they can be integrated with more traditional language testing techniques
  • Proficiency in other languages (Chinese or Spanish a plus!)
