Director of Technology

As Director of Technology, you will play a critical role in making sure that Spark Digital is a leader in our industry and that we evolve our technology strategy faster than the competition. You will oversee a large and diverse team of engineers who will look to you for inspiration, best practices, and mentorship. You will ensure our clients get solutions that meet their (and our) high standards by overseeing our technical output and lending your deep experience to identify and solve our most complex challenges. Responsibilities

Leadership
  • Sets the vision and technology strategy for the company. 
  • Identifies and implements ways to further incentivize, train, and support technical employees
  • Defines and communicates company-level best practices to technology teams and actively ensures they are implemented.
  • Manages technical personnel performance, behaviors, and morale, while coaching and mentoring others and building a culture that aligns individuals' and the company's goals.
  • Actively participates in the professional community to attract talent and cultivate new ideas and best practices.

Clients & Projects
  • Leads, supervises, and reviews client relationships and communications from a technical delivery perspective.
  • Oversees the delivery of high-level product specifications with attention to system integration, feasibility, and budget constraints.
  • Acts as a technical escalation point for senior engineers and/or clients.

Recruiting & On-Boarding
  • Works with the recruiting team to identify and evaluate technical talent.
  • Develops, manages, and standardizes technical interview processes. 
  • Provides on-boarding oversight of new employees from a technical perspective.

Cross-Functional 
  • Leads the definition of technical KPIs and works with cross-functional leaders to provide transparent reporting and insights to Partners. 
  • Ensures cross-functional coordination of internal and client-facing activities for efficient and effective use of technical personnel and evolution of company practices.  
  • Collaborates with the Training team to define and create technical training plans based on clients' needs/trends and personnel needs/desires. 
  • Partners with facilities team regarding infrastructure, hardware and software needs on new projects for capacity planning and solution design.

Sales Support
  • Supports business development and pre-sales activities by participating in early discussions, supporting the development and presentation of solutions to prospective clients, and helping to formalize pre-sales practices.
  • Participates in pre-sales activities by managing technical resource engagement/allocation, ensuring estimations and proposals are being created in a timely manner and according to our standards.
  • Continuously observes trends, understands clients’ key business drivers and proactively identifies opportunities to sell our services, including: writing project case studies, supporting the creation of marketing materials, serving as a public representative of Spark Digital in the market, etc. 


Qualifications
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in Software Development.
  • BS or advanced degree in software engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • Excels at critical reasoning and decision making.
  • Challenges the status quo and drives innovation.
  • Continues to stay technically curious and stays on top of the latest technologies, tools, and frameworks and proactively provides internal and external recommendations.
  • Experience leading large, distributed software development teams working on complex projects for foreign clients.
  • A technical generalist, someone who loves learning the fundamentals of many different technologies, languages, frameworks, and infrastructures. A specialist in one area is not the right fit.
  • Strong knowledge of software design patterns and when to apply them.
  • Knowledge of Agile and SDLC concepts, practices, and techniques.
  • Competency developing, validating, and deploying web and/or mobile applications.
  • Familiar with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Strong knowledge of non-functional areas, such as: performance, scalability, user experience, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (in English).
  • Obsessive focus on details and accuracy of final deliverables.
  • Experience in cloud computing environments.
