What are we looking for?
We are looking for a highly talented Senior Big Data Engineer with plenty of experience in implementing and running cloud based streaming data platforms, preferably on AWS or Google technologies. We want you to work with our talented and passionate team to design and implement a data platform that will support our next growth phase (and beyond) by delivering the data needed to provide the team with insight for decision making and for creating awesome customer experiences. You will have a unique opportunity to get involved early to shape both the team and the technology.
In previous jobs you will have designed, implemented and operated high quality and robust cloud based data platforms / applications utilising technologies such as Kafka, Kafka Streams, AWS Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery and Spark and languages like Python and Java, ideally within a Financial Services or FinTech environment (but this is not a showstopper). You will have experience in integrating with BI tools like Tableau and Power BI and it is a given that you understand and have worked with more traditional data technology (e.g. SQL, Data Warehousing)
Pair programming, continuous integration and delivery, test driven development and data quality should be second nature to you and the thought of writing code without tests should make you grimace. You are most definitely an advocate of Agile and Lean ways of working. The letters GDPR don’t scare you and you believe strongly that our customer’s data is sacred.
You have a real passion for using data to solve customer and business problems by working collaboratively with those around you, in particular the engineering team and data scientists. You will be somebody who is happy to get stuck into what you need to do but also get involved in things outside of your specific experience and functional expertise when needed.
What about a previous life?
Technical competencies and experience
/ Expertise (3-5 yrs experience) as a big data engineer, designing and implementing cloud based, big data platforms. Which means you:
/ Have excellent knowledge of languages like SQL, Java, Python
/ Have worked with stream processing technologies like Kafka, K-Streams, KSQL, AWS Kenisis etc.
/ Have worked with RedShift and/or BigQuery etc.
/ Have worked with reporting tools like Athena, Tableau, PowerBI
/ Have experience with more traditional technologies including SQL and Data Warehousing, OLAP etc.
/ Excellent understanding of GDPR and privacy by design
/ A passion for clean data through built in data quality using methods like automation, Test Driven Development and Pair Programming
/ A strong focus on continuous integration and delivery
/ Strong working knowledge of Agile and Lean methods
/ Experience debugging and fixing production issues under pressure
Non technical competencies and experience
/ Always keep things simple and place the customer at the centre your thinking
/ Problem-solving skills that balance pragmatic technology choices with innovation, to solve customer problems and business needs
/ A passion for data and holding us all accountable for always treating customer data with respect (in line with GDPR principles)
/ A collaborator who can work independently but prioritises the team over self and leaves your ego at the door
/ Willing to get your hands dirty to unblock and enable the whole team
/ Thrives working in an agile / lean environment
/ A healthy tolerance for ambiguity that comes with fast paced digital workplaces
/ A built in motivation to keep yourself up to date with emerging technology and to share knowledge with your colleagues
Why on earth would you want to work at DeadHappy?
Great question.
Working at DeadHappy won’t be for everyone. We’re new, growing fast, pretty unstructured and we have no rules (literally none). You’ll get clear goals, and support whenever you need it, but it’s totally up to you to get stuck into what you need to do. You’ll also need to get involved in things outside of your experience and functional expertise.
We don’t have beanbags and Xboxes, happily we’ve moved on from working on scaffolding boards, but if you have a need for home comforts, this probably isn’t the place for you.
This is a huge opportunity for someone to get involved in something we all believe in and think will be very successful. Financial services at best is dull and misguided, at worst it’s downright immoral. Layer in that we’re dealing with products related to death and you’ve got a perfect storm of crappy products that are overpriced, overcomplicated, oversold, and boring as hell. We’re going to change all that...
It will be an adventure, we’ll all learn a huge amount along the way, and the best news is that we’ll also pay you some money. If you’re ambitious, looking to grow and learn, and want to build something awesome, then your search is over
