* Community Prosecutor Job Description: 
The Office of the Second Judicial District Attorney improves the quality of life of the citizens of Bernalillo County by reducing crime through thoughtful enforcement of the law and the development of a criminal justice system. The Office is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and is seeking applicants to serve as the community prosecutor for the International District. This position is a part of a Community Based Crime Reduction (CBCR) grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), with the goal of integrating crime prevention and prosecution with economic development, community health, housing, and neighborhood safety programs.  More information about the grant program can be found at http://www.lisc.org/our-initiatives/safe-neighborhoods/cbcr/what-cbcr/

The Community Prosecutor will work with our Crime Strategies Unit to identify priority offenders, evaluate cases for lower-level offenders to determine if they are better routed to Drug Court, Mental Health Court, Veterans Court, Young Adult Court, or non-court alternatives inside and outside the criminal justice system, analyze localized crime trends, and act as a critical liaison to educators, non-profits, neighborhood associations, and local businesses. The Community Prosecutor will work to build vital connections between the DA’s Office and community stakeholders, enhancing the accessibility of the criminal justice system, and strengthening the community's trust. 

The Community Prosecutor will also work closely with the grant’s Project Administrator who is responsible for day-to-day implementation, progress, and contracted services. The Community Prosecutor, District Attorney, Chief of Policy and Planning, Chief Administration Officer, and Project Administrator will meet monthly to discuss CBCR implementation, alignment with work plan/timeline, and progress toward final and interim goals and objectives. Progress will be shared and discussed as part of the bimonthly Leadership Council community meetings and members will be tasked with modifying strategies and/or activities if progress is not on track. The Community Prosecutor and Project Administrator will work with CBCR Training and Technical Assistance providers and other experts to design programs and activities, submit plans, improve and adjust interventions, and evaluate results. 


* Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • This position requires comprehensive and current knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure; public relations; organization and supervision; basic computer skills including working knowledge of office systems; fully effective trial skills; ability to draft legal documents; ability to work effectively with other criminal agencies; ability to communicate effectively; ability to research/analyze information and situations; knowledge of the International District and its community. 
  • Works independently with minimal consultation with supervisors (except for higher profile or complex cases). 
  • Significant prosecutorial discretion on cases within assigned caseload. 
  • Additionally, the Community Prosecutor position must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with community members from diverse socio-economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. 

* Requirements:
  • Requirements: Licensed attorney to practice law in good standing either in New Mexico or another state with the ability to obtain a limited license, plus a minimum of four (4) years as a practicing attorney in criminal law or three (3) years as a prosecuting attorney.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Five (5) years or more of relevant prosecution experience.

  • Work is performed in an office environment as well as significant work out of the office and in the community.  

*Salary: 
  • Salary for the proposed Community Prosecutor position was arrived at with reference to similarly situated Senior Level Trial Attorneys employed by the District Attorney's Office and commensurate with the role and qualifications of a Senior Trial Attorney.
