About New York City Cyber Command
NYC Cyber Command was created in 2017 by Executive Order to lead the City’s cyber defense efforts, working across more than 100 agencies and offices to prevent, detect, respond, and recover from cyber threats. NYC Cyber Command is committed to protecting NYC infrastructure and critical systems from malicious attacks through the use of the latest technologies, public-private partnerships, and regular training and exercises for City employees.
Job Description
The Communications Manager, in coordination with the Chief Operating Officer, will lead the organization’s communications strategy and implementation. Day to day responsibilities will include developing public remarks, press releases, quotes, email blasts, paid media campaigns, social media copy, correspondence, and publications.
Some of the duties s/he will have are:
- Evaluate and respond to incoming requests for Cyber Command participation at events outside of NYC government.
- Build and maintain working relationships with external media outlets, including with news organizations and cybersecurity related institutions.
- Manage all aspects of Cyber Command’s public facing presence.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory full-time experience related to projects and policies required by the particular position; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
Preferred Skills
The successful candidate will likely have previous experience with journalism or public relations / media relations in a government, NGO, or political context, and will be used to multi-tasking several projects at once; and will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of New York City’s local government and media environment.
- 5+ years communications experience.
- Expert understanding of New York City government.
- Strong writing skills under time constraints, both short-form and long (i.e., op-ed pieces, editing testimony) while understanding audiences and communication channels.
- Experience handling incoming media inquiries and managing media events.
- Executing regular email blasts (and manage lists for same).
- Helping update and maintain online material, including social media.
- Ability to collaborate with good humor and multi-task from high-end creative work to repetitive digital maintenance work.
- Mastery at crisis communications.
- Experience with qualitative and quantitative research, such as focus groups, polling, etc.
- Firm, high level technical understanding of cyber security related issues to be able to translate technical responses to media.
- Expert knowledge of all communication methods, including digital marketing, and knowing when and how to use which approach.
