R&D Engineer

The Research Data Scientist is responsible for utilizing data to develop machine learning models to be used in modeling drilling, completions, and related operations. The Research Data Scientist builds analytical models and develops a corresponding simulation package to optimize operations. The data scientist works closely with software developers to build UI (User Interface) to illustrate trends and provide insight as well as analyzes various drilling data to develop recommendations to customers. 

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Understand, review, and explore drilling and completions data features
  • Train and optimize machine learning models
  • Develop production real-time models
  • Collaborate with team on product development and product support
  • Clearly communicate with team and management
  • Document work as requested
  • Support operations with procedures, reviews, and customer interaction
  • Adhere to timeframes and deadlines set forth
  • Conduct research on targeted drilling operations and establish comprehensive analytical models
  • Work with software developers for an easily-readable result illustration
  • Provide testing and debugging prior to software release
  • Finish the written report in a timely manner for progress record
  • Think beyond simply the engineering equations, anticipate drilling problems, devise solutions and choose the best alternatives
  • Communicate with customers to resolve issues as needed
  • Review data and trends to identify value-add insight to customers
  • Identify and communicate opportunities to improve efficiencies in operations
  • Be on call for solving data issues as required
  • Other duties as required 

Qualifications and Skills
Required:
  • Basic knowledge of drilling operations and downhole tools, including drill string and BHA configurations, drilling bits and casing tubular
  • Four-year degree in petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or civil engineering
  • Proficiency in machine learning technology 
  • Working knowledge of JAVA
  • Proficiency in Python/Ruby/Matlab/R programming 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Leadership skills and ability to work well with teams effectively
  • Analytical thinking skills
  • Ability to identify anomalies and problem data
  • Ability to train others 

Recommended but not required:
  • Master or Doctorate in petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or civil engineering
