Objective
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Alaska Region has the need for communication expertise to assist with a large portfolio of writing projects. Between September 2019 and May 2020, we are seeking additional writing and editing capacity in the Office of External Affairs, a program charged with supporting the Service’s mission by communicating about Service issues, activities, and employees in accurate, meaningful, and inspiring ways with a wide variety of audiences.

Essential Functions

The selected candidate will assist the division throughout with various duties that span across the various phases of planning:
- Help design, develop, implement, and evaluate an employee profile series for distribution internally and externally on Service communication platforms – from employee newsletters to the web and social media.
- Construct clearly composed communication products, such as stories, blog and suggested social media posts, from facts and opinions gathered through research, interviews, study and contact with Service employees and partners.
- Select, organize, and analyze information to be shared and presented in a variety of ways on a variety of communication platforms.
- Research, develop, write, and edit communication products and articles to provide a fuller understanding of specific aspect of Service programs, operations, and employees work.
- Ensure documents do not conflict with policies and objectives of the Service’s programs and mission works, and work with appropriate officials to resolve differences and conflicts.
- Considers and incorporates visually pleasing layout of stories and information to attract reader interest.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with the External Affairs team and employees across the region.
- Perform edit services on materials written by the External Affairs team that may be used for internal and or external publications. Edits may include verifying factual information, message to audience analysis, use of appropriate grammar, length, and complexity.
Qualifications
The selected candidate shall possess:
- Bachelor's degree in any business or natural resources field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong collaboration skills working with teams.
- Positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office software suite, including Microsoft Word, Excel.
- Thorough knowledge of personal computer systems (PC and/or Macintosh).
- Knowledge not required, but desired:
- Proficiency in Google G Suite – Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Office space and computer will not be provided. The contractor is responsible for providing their own office and equipment.
