Research Fisheries Biologist

FISHERIES BIOLOGIST POSITION 1: CONTRACTOR IS TO PROVIDE A RESEARCH FISHERIES BIOLOGIST POSITION IN SUPPORT OF THE NW FISHERIES SCIENCE CENTER’S SALMON HABITAT ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING PROGRAM.

Essential Functions

The Fish Ecology Division at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center conducts scientific research on threatened and endangered salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest, including watershed assessments to aid in restoration planning and habitat monitoring to meet NMFS statutory obligations under the Endangered Species Act. The objective of this contract is to obtain services of two Analysts to collect and analyze habitat monitoring data in the Pacific Northwest, and assist in developing salmon life cycle models for restoration planning. The analyses will focus on (1) translating habitat assessment information into salmon habitat capacity or salmon survival changes for use in salmon life cycle models, (2) development of salmon life cycle models, and (3) collection of habitat monitoring data in river basins of the Pacific Northwest.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences field required with emphasis on fisheries ecology and/or statistics preferred.  Master’s degree or higher in environmental science or engineering with minimum of 5 years environmental consulting experience also preferred.

The selected candidate shall possess: 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills working with teams.
  • Positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office software suite, including Microsoft Word, Excel.
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computer systems (PC and/or Macintosh).
  • Professional work environment related to various phases of planning.
  • Knowledge not required, but desired:
  • Experience in CAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and ArcGIS.
  • Working knowledge of planning products and planning principles, concepts, methodologies, rules, and regulations
  • Proficiency in Google G Suite – Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar.
  • Proficiency in MS Project

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

This is anticipated to be a full time position.  

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although limited overnight travel may be expected.
