Helicopter Pilot (Bell 407, AS350-B3)

Chloeta is recruiting rotor-wing pilots for light (Type 3) platforms for special use mission support such as: low level reconnaissance flights (under 500 AGL), helitack, passenger transport, external load, belly hook, longline VR, water/retardant delivery, mountainous terrain, aerial ignition (PSD/torch), deep snow and/or law enforcement.  Assigned platforms will be Bell 407, Airbus H-125 (AS-350B3) or similar.  

Pilots should expect to fly over mountainous terrain, in instrument conditions, and conduct night operations. Some flights will involve landings and/or low approaches to uncontrolled airstrips or helispots in remote (backcountry) locations during the hours of daylight and darkness.

Minimum Pilot Requirements

  • Current FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Meet specific minimum flight hour requirements
  • Subject to Washington Office (WO) Pilot Standardization Branch review and approval after inspection of the pilot logbook, licenses, medical, and professional flying experience relative to the proposed position
  • Current Class II Medical Certificate

Responsibilities
 
  • Represent Chloeta professionally at times
  • Be prepared for dispatch within 15 minutes of notification to launch each day while on duty  
  • Ensure aircraft operations are conducted in accordance with USFS approved operational directives, USFS Aviation Management 5700 Manual, 5709.16 Handbook, approved Forest Service and Interagency Guides and Standards, and other USFS policies, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) by all personnel engaged in flight operations
  • Conduct operations in accordance with 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91, General Operating and Flight Rules, and USFS Aviation Management 5700 Manual, 5709.16 Handbook and approved Forest Service and Interagency Guides when flying any missions 
  • Conduct training in USFS aircraft on a non-interference basis with mission operations
  • Complete all post flight documentation to include logs for flight time, pilot availability, maintenance, Operational Loads Monitoring System (OLMS), and any other routine reporting requirements 
  • Report close calls and complete other flight reporting 
  • Support aircraft maintenance by performing the following tasks when necessary: towing, taxiing, engine runs;flight verification, and flights to evaluate and/or validate the functionality and performance of non-safety of flight equipment; performance of pre-flight or turnaround checks; servicing such as fueling, window wash, hydraulic fluids, and oil

Compensation and Work Schedule
 
  • Compensation is commensurate with experience, education and capability
  • Standard duty schedule options are 6 days on duty and 1 off or 12 days on and 2 off
  • Aircrews could receive mission tasking for up to 12 consecutive days in any 14 day period, not to exceed Flight Hour and Duty Limitations
  • Each Pilot will establish a Home of Record (HOR) from which reimbursable travel expenses will be calculated. Any travel that is not Government directed or approved will be at the Pilot’s expense

Security Clearance
 
  • Pilot Minimum Background Investigations (MBI): Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD) 12 background investigations are no longer required; Flight crew member record checks required in accordance with 49 USC 44703 and 49 CFR 1544.230, regardless of the type of operation being conducted (parts 91,121,125,133,135,137 or public aircraft) must be completed

Travel/Relocation Required
 
  • The default base of operations is the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), Boise, ID; Pilots will be highly mobile and routinely deployed to and from select Interagency Bases throughout the United States and its territories, as requested by the ordering agency
  • Government Ordered Travel: All Government reimbursed authorized travel expenses (airfare, ground transportation, etc.) must be approved in advance of the travel based on estimated costs; Lodging and per diem costs associated with this requirement is reimbursable for Pilot positions

    *Flight hour requirements may be reduced by 50% if the pilot submits evidence of satisfactory completion of the manufacture’s approved pilot ground and flight procedures training in the applicable make and model or FS/OAS-accepted equivalent training (accepted equivalency applicable to Type II Helicopters Only).

  • Refer to the Interagency Helicopter Pilot Practical Test Standards (IHPPTS); The IHPPTS identifies and establishes additional pilot knowledge and skills that are expected for each specific interagency helicopter pilot qualification for day, night, and night vision goggle (NVG) operations
