Senior Optical Transport Engineer

Reporting to the Director of Network Engineering, the Senior Optical Network Planning Engineer works within the Network Engineering team to engineer, plan, build, and drive the strategic direction of CENIC's optical transport network.

Duties / Responsibilities:  

  • Plan, design, and implement long haul and metro optical transport networks to support Associate needs.
  •  Solve complex OSP engineering problems with innovative solutions and select the most effective design to manage the resulting work order through to completion. 
  • Manage implementation tasks, including coordination with CENIC's Operations and Core engineers, commercial carriers, and other service providers on the installation, testing and/or acceptance of infrastructure or services as necessary. 
  • Identify the necessary requirements to successfully run cabling through ISP and OSP environments.
  • Document and prepare detailed work plans for construction or redesign of existing OSP infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of fiber, ethernet, routing, and network management. Ability to read, interpret, and follow complex maps, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Lead review meetings with contractors/engineers to verify adherence to schedule, quality of work, potential challenges, changes in scope, reasons for delays and all other matters related to the project implementation.
  • Provide functional advice or training to other team members.
  • Available for after-hours on-call duties.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of DWDM networking fundamentals or strong desire to learn more about optical networking. 
  • Broad experience designing Outside Plant work plans with a thorough understanding of right-of-way, DOT, and local municipal permitting.
  • Field/Construction experience is a plus.
  • Skilled at evaluating data to make sound decisions, with the ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments.
  • Must have a strong work ethic, be well organized, and reliable. Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of the telecommunications industry standards, practices, and regulations pertaining to the engineering of fiber optic outside plant facilities.
  • Knowledge of aerial and underground construction methods and engineering requirements preferred.
  • Experience with optical fiber measurements and troubleshooting (OTDR, OSA, power measurements, etc.) is preferred.

LOCATION:  CENIC has two California offices, the home office in La Mirada and a smaller office in Berkeley. This position will work out of the La Mirada office.
