Job Description: Medical Assistant
Summary of Job Description:
To assist the providers as well as the other nursing staff and medical assistants in providing efficient and high quality patient care.
Reports to: Registered Nurse, Medical Director
● Education: high school diploma
● Certified Medical Assistant License not required but would be favorable
● Experience in a medical office desired
● Excellent customer service skills
● Excellent phone communication skills
● Basic experience with computers
● Ability to manage time, multi-task, and handle high stress environments with ever changing demands
● Having patients in the exam rooms promptly with all documentation completed in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
● Taking patient vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, O2 saturation) heights, weights, and head circumferences.
● Completion of all forms utilized by the provider in providing services accurately (growth charts, WIC forms, MPE, Pap forms, cytology-pathology, etc.)
● Using flags in every room appropriately to save time and effort.
● Place COMPLETED triage sheets in the box outside of the exam room after the patient has been placed in the room.
● Assisting in entering medical records from outside providers including consultation notes, laboratory and imaging results.
● Assisting provider in ensuring up-to-date health maintenance for each patient seen in the clinic by using Clinical Event Manager in the EHR.
● Assisting provider in ordering standard laboratory tests for chronic disease visits.
● Assisting provider in submitting the Electronic Superbill when completed and directed to by the provider.
● Assisting provider in e-prescribing medications once the appropriate changes to the medicines have been made by the provider.
● Assisting other medical assistants and nursing staff in scheduling consultation appointments or imaging appointments for patients as ordered by providers.
● Assisting provider in reconciling medications and allergies for each patient at each clinical encounter.
● Assisting with exams, invasive procedures and minor surgeries that are carried out by providers.
● Assisting receptionist in taking messages
● Assisting receptionist in scheduling appointments and surgeries.
● Obtaining consents for medical procedures with the assistance of physician
● Answering phones.
● Alerting the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a shortage in needed supplies so they can be ordered
● Cleaning and stocking rooms daily.
● Cleaning and sterilizing supplies, rooms and equipment daily.
● Preparing patients for examination or procedures including positioning, draping, shaving and disinfecting treatment sites.
● Applying basic dressings. Basic or simple dressings only include the application of ointment, telfa, 4 x 4s, and kling to minor wounds. Assistant can remove the old dressing and reapply the new one (if appropriate) but only after the physician has made the assessment.
● Collecting and labeling urine, sputum, and biopsy specimens.
● Administering medications orally, vaginally, rectally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly and interdermally as ordered by the provider. Administering prescribed drops to the nose, eye and ear.
● Checking supplies for expiration dates and disposing of properly.
● Performing skin tests (tuberculin), but may not interpret results.
● Phoning prescriptions to pharmacies after the physician has reviewed and approved them.
● Administering oxygen therapies per mask or nasal cannula as prescribed by provider.
● Administering nebulizer treatments as prescribed by provider.
● Communicate with other physician offices, patients, and other ancillary health care offices like pharmacies at the direction of the providers in order to provide efficient patient care.
● Placing leads and running EKGs and assisting provider in performing a treadmill stress test.
● Removing sutures or staples from superficial wounds.
● Removing casts, splints, and other external devices.
● Performing visual acuities, visual field screening, hand-held audiometries, and tympanometries.
● Performing urine dipstick testing, urine pregnancy tests, fingerstick glucose, hemoglobin, and PT/INRs, rapid strep testing, and rapid flu testing.
● Performing control test on urine dipsticks, glucose, hemoglobin A1c machines.
● Monitor and record temperature for refrigerator.
● Placing patients on NST machine for fetal monitoring.
● Performing peak flow studies - pre and post bronchodilator - recording results
● All pregnant patients must be given a non-sterile urine cup to give a urine sample. All pregnant patients should have a clean catch urine sample. Explain to the patient how to get the sample, what to do with it after taking the sample and give instructions on how to find the restroom if needed. If the pregnant patient is at the health center for the first time, all OB forms need to be placed in the chart with the initial information written on them.
● Helping to maintain an even flow of patients and monitoring to ensure that all providers have patients in exam rooms and ready to be seen
● Examining the patient, under supervision of the RN / LPN, when a provider has to leave for a hospital emergency that allows them to make a decision to wait to see another provider or reschedule the appointment.
● Frequently communicate with the patient and the front desk when a scheduled appointment may be delayed.
● Clearly communicate with the provider when taking lunch and breaks and who will be cross-covering during these times.
● At the end of each day, all equipment should be removed from the rooms and lights turned off. If there are any doctors remaining in the health center, the assistant should notify them that the assistant is leaving and ask if they need any assistance before leaving.
● Minimum of a high school diploma
● Experience in a health care setting preferred
