Job Purpose:        

Business Insider is looking for a visual features reporter to join the team in London and produce photo-driven stories on a wide range of topics, including travel, food, lifestyle, and real estate.

The right candidate should be experienced in telling stories in a photo-heavy format, and should be keen to produce lists and rankings on a variety of themes, from airlines to restaurants to top business schools. They should be confident in pitching ideas and writing stories in line with Business Insider reporting standards. They must have great judgement when it comes to finding the perfect photo to tell a story and is responsible to help grow audience traffic by achieving quarterly traffic targets.

This position would be perfect for someone who wants to write stories like these:

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Pitching original slideshow ideas and working with the Senior Lifestyle Editor and Associate Lifestyle Editor to develop framing and structure.

  • Delivering a set number of originally reported stories per week in a photo-heavy format.

  • Producing lists and rankings, as required.

  • Ensuring copy and stories are accurate, properly researched, and error-free.

  • Arranging and conducting effective interviews.

  • Using the CMS correctly to publish stories.

  • Travelling to report on stories where necessary.

Critical outcomes: 

  • Achievement of quarterly traffic targets (measured by pageviews).

  • Delivery of required number of stories per week.

  • Delivery of clean, accurate and error-free stories.

  • Delivery of daily pitches in line with key themes for Business Insider and Insider audiences.

Experience:

  • Proven strong reporting and writing experience in an international newsroom and experience of reporting on stories for a global audience across a wide range of themes, including food, travel, lifestyle and business.

  • Proven experience of telling stories in a photo-driven format in a style similar to Business Insider slideshows.

  • Proven experience of working at a digital publication.

  • Genuine passion for new experiences and ability to adapt to new cultures and environments.

  • Interpersonal savvy (excellent communications skills upwards, downwards, internally and externally).

  • A self-starter – pro-active and ability to work independently

  • Ability to lead on editorial projects.

  • An appreciation and passion for Business Insider and what we do well, and a strong sense of stories and places Business Insider readers will find interesting.

  • A desire to work as part of a global team in a fast-paced environment, building and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of diverse people.

  • A solid grasp of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

  • High level of attention to detail.

  • Results orientated.

  • Editorial judgement which is proven to be balanced and objective when making decisions.

  • Flexible mindset and ability to adapt an approach as the requirements of a situation change.

  • Strong organisation, planning and priority setting skills.

  • Strong photo editing skills (such as Adobe Photoshop) and proven experience of using photo editing software. Other multimedia skills an advantage.

  • Working knowledge of other languages an advantage.
