Director, Search Strategy

Your job is to help more of them find our stories by optimizing everything from our products to our editorial strategy to ensure we’re the most discoverable brand via search.

The Role

Are you obsessed with getting featured in the top three search results for any topic, anywhere in the world? Do you thrill your friends with tales of canonical URLs, hreflang, meta descriptions and E.A.T. guidelines? Do SEOs around the world seek you out to interpret the latest Google algorithm change? 

We are looking for an owner for our search strategy at Insider, Inc. You will work across business units to develop and implement a cohesive plan of attack to ensure that our products, stories, processes and worklfows are optimized to attract and grow our search audience. 

What You Will Do

  • Create, own, and execute on a comprehensive search optimization strategy that includes collaboration with all parts of the company, including editorial, revenue, commerce, subscription and product teams.
  • Develop tactical plans based on that strategy with counterparts within those business units, prioritizing among multiple content and product initiatives.
  • Partner with head of data products to define and own KPIs to benchmark and enhance the effectiveness of search strategy, including growing and converting audience, performance metrics, Lighthouse scores, etc.
  • Provide regular insight, analysis and guidance to business units.
  • Act as an advocate for our audience, understanding their behavior and needs via A/B testing, user testing, and audience segmentation to convert search visitors into habitual readers and subscribers.
  • Anticipate, interpret, and quickly adapt to changes in search engine algorithms, ranking signals, product and workflow best practices.
  • Manage relationships with external consultants or agencies, constantly evaluating their performance to ensure we’ve got the right relationships and terms in place to support our efforts.
  • Stay on top of evolving trends within the industry, acting as a voice of authority within the SEO community.
  • Be a member of and grow a diverse, inclusive team.

Skills You Will Need

  • 7-10 years managing a search practice within the media industry.
  • Demonstrated track record of effectiveness in acquiring, growing and converting an audience via search.
  • Agility to ensure our stories are discoverable via search at inception, infusing best practices into our products, content strategies, workflows and processes.
  • Analytical and critical thinking to provide actionable insights across a variety of organizations with authority and credibility. 
  • Deep connections and relationships within the SEO community, including with prospective employees, consultants and agencies.
  • Ability to recruit, lead and develop diverse teams, whether direct reports, matrixed colleagues or stakeholders.
