Maintenance Technician

The Role
Bowery Farming is seeking a Maintenance Technician who will manage maintenance & facilities management operations in our indoor farms.  The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for driving and maintaining the overall function of our automation, lighting & irrigation systems, leading resolution of equipment emergencies, and playing an important role in the design and buildout of future farm facilities.  Unlike traditional Maintenance Technician roles, you’ll also be supported by Bowery’s proprietary farm management software, BoweryOS, which delivers unprecedented support in monitoring equipment performance and maintaining efficient operations.  You will operate in a multidisciplinary environment with engineers, computer scientists, agricultural scientists, business operators and farm operations, and your work will meaningfully impact the evolution of the indoor agriculture industry.  This role will be based at Bowery’s NJ farming facilities.

What you’ll do at Bowery
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance of irrigation, lighting & conveyance equipment using the appropriate specifications, procedures, and manuals
  • Define & follow preventative maintenance routines, documentation and procedures while protecting the food safety of the facility
  • Track and store equipment & parts inventory
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships across all levels of the organization
  • Conduct maintenance and basic troubleshooting of robotics & automation equipment
  • Troubleshoot electrical, plumbing, and mechanical problems related to all environmental support & material handling equipment components
  • Assist with basic electronics/ Programmable Logic Controls 
  • Coordinate with external vendors to manage major equipment outage resolution
  • Drive high levels of equipment uptime and minimize catastrophic failures
  • Share learnings picked up in the course of performing these duties to help build more robust farms in the future

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work all days and shifts, including overtime (24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation, including holidays)
  • PC or Mac competency, Word & Excel and Windows OS
  • Experience in the following areas: 
    • Conveyance systems and controls 
    • Repair of material handling equipment 
    • Predictive/ Preventative maintenance tools and procedures 
    • Metal and wood fabrication 
    • Blueprint and electrical schematic reading 
    • Electrical and electronic principles
    • Basic plumbing
    • Basic Programmable Logic Controls (PLC)
  • Comfortable with Physical Requirements including;
    • Lift and move objects up to 49 pounds each
    • Regular bending, lifting, stretching and reaching both below the waist and above the head
    • Ability to climb ladders and catwalks safely and without limitation
    • Dexterity in eye/hand coordination, feet (foot pedals), manual (picking, pinching, holding, grasping), and wrist motion (repetitive flexion/rotation)
    • Working conditions may include small spaces, dust, fumes/odors, hot/cold temperatures, inside/outside noise, vibration, standing on concrete for long hours and wet or uneven surfaces
    • Must be able to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours
  • Preferred;
    • Degree from a vocational school or college with a focus in the Mechanical or Electrical field
    • 2+ years apprenticeship or equivalent experience in the Mechanical or Electrical field
