Today, doing a home renovation is an abysmal consumer experience and not easy for contractors either. Block democratizes access to high-end design, while combining design, construction, and materials into a streamlined experience. Block simplifies a complex and convoluted process and gives homeowners certainty on outcomes, quality, price, and time.

Role and Responsibilities
We are looking for an Engineering Leader. This leader is critical in scaling the business. You will need to build processes and infrastructure that allow for 100x volume of business. You are a systems-thinker by nature, and use technology to reduce complexity, increase velocity, save money, and improve quality of outcomes. You have empathy for both homeowners and builders, both of which are critical for the company’s success.
Responsibilities include:
- Build a high-performance engineering team that covers the whole technology stack
- Create scalable systems, processes, and standards that continuously improve customer outcomes, contractor experience, and business economics
- Create feedback loops between engineering and the customer / contractor, and be disciplined in building toward business objectives
- Own system health by upholding uptime standards and establishing team culture and procedures for addressing risks and triaging critical systems.
- Optimize our infrastructure standards and processes to enable and sustain high-velocity development across multiple teams.
- Manage recruiting, headcount planning, and vendor relationships while participating in the budgeting process
- Collaborate cross-functionally with business and product on the strategic and technical roadmap to solve business objectives and unlock technical innovation.
- Cultivate a high-performing, empathetic, and tenacious team culture
Build and connect the three pillars of the Block platform:
- Consumer experience / growth - guide consumers through their end-to-end renovation journey, building tools and consumer experiences, including our customer dashboard, visualization engine, and marketing experiences
- Internal / operational tools - create the software that enables efficiency, clarity, and ease-of-use across our operational workstreams. Renovations are historically complex and convoluted. We need to derive elegant solutions through rigorous attention to detail and a wider perspective on impact, associated with internal time saved and improved outcomes for customers
- Contractor technology - full-stack tools that enable our contractors to grow their business and better serve their clients. Enable the success of our contractors with tools so valuable they would use them on non-Block projects as well.
Requirements
We are open minded to a variety of backgrounds but ultimately want a high-horsepower leader with a great appreciation for the systems thinking and scalability.
- Highly ambitious and goal-oriented
- Ability to provide leadership in technical strategy, business strategy, execution, and personnel development
- Bias for building for long term, but able to find efficient short-term strategies
- 15+ years experience in building and leading engineering teams
